·         Momma, Let Your Babies Grow Up to be Biotech Truckers (8th from the bottom)

NEW YORK, Jan. 22 - Biotech is going on the road and into education in the guise of a seriously tricked-out eighteen-wheeler.

The mobile MdBioLab-on-wheels, a project launched by The Institute for Genomic Research, the University of Maryland Biotechnology Institute, and the non-profit MdBio, Inc., will begin pulling into high schools throughout Maryland in February, according to the organizations.

The rolling lab comfortably fits 32 students and is scheduled to introduce about 20,000 teens to biology and biotechnology while also training hundreds of teachers a year.

·         Eat more, weigh less, live longer?

Clever genetic detective work may have pinpointed the reason why a near-starvation diet prolongs the life of many animals. Ronald Kahn at Harvard Medical School in Boston, US, and his colleagues have been able to extend the lifespan of mice by 18 per cent by blocking the rodent's accumulation of fat in specific cells. This suggests that leanness - and not necessarily diet - promotes longevity in "calorie restricted" animals.

·         People who frequently reuse water bottles may be risking their health

TORONTO (CP) - While people may think they're doing a good deed for the environment when they reuse water bottles for anything from orange juice in a bagged lunch to a week's worth of water refills from the office water cooler, researchers say they could be risking their health.

Dangerous bacteria and potentially toxic plastic compounds have been found in the types of water bottles typically reused in classrooms and workplaces countrywide.

Email etiquette for job search: what not to do

______________________________________________________________________________________________

It’s very much like a first date. Here are a few no-nos:

1.      Do not include more than one recipient (never CC it to a few employers or recruiters at once)

2.       Do not use any substandard formatting tools, such as various patterns on the margins, colored background, tables, etc. Remember that using ALL CAPS is shouting. Use upper-case letters only for headings.

3.       Do not start your letter with “Dear Sirs”.

4.       Do not miss an “address” line (always include “Dear Manager” or “Dear Recruiter” or at the very least “Dear Recipient”).

5.       Do not use contractions (I’m, there’s, etc.) or other colloquial usages. Be formal and official.

6.       Do not use abbreviations of the organizations without spelling them out; the correct usage should be: College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO).

7.       Do not attach a resume with “MyResume” or similar file name; the suggested example is: Certified_MedLabTechnologist_Montreal_Quebec.

8.       Do not have a subject line with “Job Applicant” in it; the suggested example is: Programmer Analyst Database Designer – Orlando, FL.

9.       Do not “skip” writing a cover letter by saying “please see my resume enclosed”.

10.   Do not write more than 3 short paragraphs in your cover letter.

11.   Do not attach a cover letter, if you have already provided it in the body of your email. If you do, make sure it is a different letter.

12.   Do not forget to include position you are applying for.

13.   Do not forget to be “Sincerely yours,”

14.   Do not forget to include your full name and your full contact information in the body of your email, even if all this is in your resume as well.

15.   Do not delete previous message when replying (wrong: I am interested in this position. Please send me more info – ah? who? what position?).

And above all, please remember that no matter how “automated” and “impersonal” some of the email addresses are (i.e. jobs@carees.com), there is always a human being, a living person, who is receiving all your emails.
