· Nutrients Are Key To Preventing Cancer
WASHINGTON (AP) -- Can a diet rich in a particular nutrient really prevent cancer? The government is recruiting 32,000 middle-aged men to see if selenium or vitamin E can prevent prostate cancer, the biggest clinical trial yet to address such dietary questions.
· U.K. to Offer Prescription Heroin to Addicts
Heroin addicts in the United Kingdom will soon be able to get the drug legally and for free through a National Health Service prescription. Addicts will have access to prescribed supplies of the drug, but will have to use it in medically supervised areas, with clean needles. The heroin will only be prescribed when other treatments, such as methadone, fail or if doctors believe they won't work, a U.K. government official told the BBC. The move is part of the British government's new treatment strategy for hard-core addicts.
The HIV-1 Genotyping Kit developed by Ontario-based Visible Genetics Inc. (VGI) has been selected for use on all patients enrolled in a large-scale Phase III clinical trial of a GlaxoSmithKline HIV drug. VGI will sell its TRUGENETM kit to the group managing the trial. The United States Food and Drug Administration now requires genotypic and drug resistance information for all new HIV drug submissions, and in September the FDA approved VGI's TRUGENE kit and its OpenGeneTM DNA Sequencing System for routine clinical use. It is the first HIV drug resistance test to receive FDA clearance.

Should you use snail mail?
______________________________________________________________________________________________
One of the questions people often ask is “Should I use snail mail when applying for jobs?” - Good question!
Who would have asked this question 10 years ago? In fact, even a few years ago it was one of the most typical ways of applying for jobs. How many of us think of it now?
And yet, this method bears certain advantages. First of all, if you direct your mail to the right person, you have fantastic chances to be remembered. Your application will have a personal feel about it and will most likely be perceived almost like a customer service call. If there is a vacancy at the time your snail mail arrives, you have a great chance of being invited for an interview, provided, of course, your profile matches the requirements.
The drawback of sending a snail mail application is that if there is no vacancy at the moment, your resume will most likely be forgotten and may end up collecting dust on someone’s desk. It will not be entered into the company’s database and will not be available for a search.
What’s the advice? Do both, file an electronic application and send a snail mail. Two things need to be remembered: a) you need to know that there is a vacancy for which you can be a good match, and b) you need to know the name of a person making hiring decisions. And, of course, do not forget to follow up 2-3 days after your mail arrived to its destination.
