McGill University Health Centre

Montreal, Quebec, CANADA

The McGill University Health Centre (MUHC) represents the first and largest voluntary merger of university teaching hospitals in Canada. The five partners include the McGill University Faculty of Medicine, three institutions serving adult patients, i.e. the Montreal General Hospital, the Royal Victoria Hospital (including the Montreal Chest Institute), and the Montreal Neurological Hospital, as well as one institution serving children, the Montreal Children's Hospital, together with their respective research institutes.

A leading edge academic health centre, the MUHC benefits from its association with one of Canada's top medical schools, integrating patient care, teaching and research as its tripartite mission. The partner hospitals provide a high level and broad scope of specialized services, focusing on the kind of expertise that has helped them attain their international reputation for excellence. At the same time, the MUHC is renowned as a world class research institution, operating at the forefront of new knowledge, innovations, trends and technologies.

The MUHC has 11,000 employees, combined operating budgets of $400 million and a $70 million research budget. There are 910 active staff doctors, 1,277 average total beds staffed, 23,000 day surgeries annually, and 870,000 ambulatory visits annually, including 140,000 ER visits.

A bilingual and multicultural institution, the MUHC serves an increasingly diverse community. Fully one-third of the patients each year come from regions of Quebec outside the island of Montreal, from elsewhere in Canada and even from the United States for the ultra-specialized care that is provided. The MUHC accounts for one third of pediatric and one fifth of adult admissions to Montreal hospitals.

The Sisters' legacy of caring and providing hope to the sick, the poor and the disadvantaged has always had the power to inspire others to continue the work.

If you value teamwork, excellence in care, continuous learning and innovative thinking, there's a place for you at Providence Health Care.

The main city of Vancouver has several peripheral cities which combine to make Greater Vancouver. All together these equal more than 705,000 acres in size, making it the third largest city in Canada. The population of Greater Vancouver in 1998 was 1.9 million, so by now it must be close to 2 million. Vancouver has one of the most colourful ethnic populations in Canada. The city has the second largest Chinatown in North America, plus the Italian, Greek, Iranian, and Punjabi communities all have their own distinct shopping areas.

It's no big surprise that the heart of Greater Vancouver is the city of Vancouver. About one quarter of the Greater Vancouver population live in the core. The city has a number of up-beat shopping areas like Robson Street, Pacific Centre, South Granville and Fourth Avenue.
